Welcome to the home of Extra Mile Dog Rescue! We are a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to helping those who cannot help themselves.
What began as a dream for many animal lovers became a reality in August 2007 when a group of concerned citizens came together to form Extra Mile. We have worked long and hard to put our ideas into practice, and we now have a fully functioning rescue operation. We are devoted to our cause of saving lives. We do this by taking dogs from shelters, rescues, and private owners who would not have any other chance at life if not for us.
These dogs have known behavior issues. We are committed to getting to the root of these issues and, through intensive behavior modification and a stable home environment, produce sweet, well-balanced dogs. These dogs have to live in carefully chosen foster homes and are adopted to carefully chosen forever homes. Because our process is so thoughtfully carried out, many of our dogs stay in foster care for eight weeks or more.
It may sound like a lot of hard work, but these dogs work their way into our hearts. Their determination to become a part of our lives and their desire to please us is what makes rehabilitating them so rewarding. Do we get attached? Of course we do! Just look at Sparky as an example…he was our very first rescue dog and never left his foster home! But we continue to take one day at a time to find those dogs that have no other hope for salvation.
There are plenty of dogs.
What we need most is you.

Dr. Freedman at the Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center provides full veterinary care for all of the dogs of Extra Mile.
